Our Inventors and Engineers

By the Fifth Grade Science Team

Our inventors and engineers have been busy at work during the Models and Design Unit. Students made multi-sensory observations of sealed black boxes to determine what was inside. They developed conceptual models and constructed physical models that they compared to the black boxes.

The students worked in pairs using the 5-phase engineering process in order to build a free rolling go-cart, self-propelling go-cart, and a go-cart that would perform interesting maneuvers.

The children enthusiastically awaited our annual “Cottage Lane 500.” Whether the students were cheering or participating in the race, all portrayed the expectation of good sportsmanship. Congratulations to all of our students for their wonderful efforts!

In addition, our students’ creative and unique inventions were thoroughly enjoyed by all at the Cottage Lane Invention Convention.

The students are looking forward to another exciting unit – the Sound Unit! They will be investigating all the aspects of sound through numerous hands-on activities. Stay “tuned” for the next sound bite!!!!
