It’s a “Fantastic” World in Room 406!
By Mrs. Tan
Whether
falling down a rabbit hole, being swept off by a tornado, or carefully stepping
into an old wardrobe, entering a new world can be a rewarding and exciting
experience. Students are r
ecognizing
the differences between reality and fantasy and can identify with the characters
in the novels. We have explored many great fantasy picture books including the
Sweetest Fig, Jumanji, and The Great Kettles and discussed
the different elements that help to create a fantasy story. As a class, we read
The Phantom Tollbooth and worked together to examine the different themes
and lessons Milo learns throughout his fantastic journey through the Lands
Beyond. We will culminate our Fantasy unit by working in literature groups to
enter into the different fantasy worlds created by Kate DiCamillo, Madeleine
L’Engle, Jeanne DuPrau, and Elizabeth Winthrop.
Math News!
We are all
very relieved to be finished with the New York State Math Test and we are
pleased with how hard all of the students worked to prepare. This month,
students have been working on mastering
the concepts of addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. We are looking forward to
spending more time on hands- on activities and math games that help foster our
critical thinking skills.
