Art
Happenings
from Mrs. Benson, art teacher
It’s been an exciting few months in the art room at Cottage Lane. I am enjoying
returning students for the first time, as well as a new batch of 4th graders.
Each student received his own sketchbook and we have been using them daily to
explore the endless possibilities in art. We are learning about tools of the
artist from charcoal and pencils to scissors and paint. We discuss the history
of the tools and how their invention changed art making. Then
of course, we make our own art with the same tools. Last but not least, we talk
about art and use special art words to describe what we see. My first term fifth
graders created jars of fun,
pumpk
in
still lifes and abstract checkerboards. The 5th graders who have art now are
making cave paintings
and abstract line art. Fourth graders created Hudson River landscapes and Native
American crafts. Many have also earned special art days for great behavior. I’m
looking forward to more of those in the new year. Here are some pictures of your
young artists at work and a wish list for the art room. As always, thanks for
your support! —Mrs. Benson
