Mrs. Coatti and Ms. Dowling’s Class

In Mrs. Coatti and Ms. Dowling’s class we are learning different strategies that help us become better readers and writers.  Some reading strategies that we have been practicing are thinking while reading, making connections (text to self, text to text, and text to world), asking questions, wondering, making predictions, making inferences, and reading like writers. These are all strategies we use to help us understand what we are reading. As a reminder, we have all of this information on a chart, called Good Readers… Reading is only one of our ELA subjects.  The other subject is writing. Not only do we have a good readers chart, we have a Good Writers chart too. The good writers in our class gather ideas, use authors as writing role models, make use of powerful verbs, (snickered, gasped, and shivered), call the C.O.P.S, add voice, and apply R.A.F.T when writing. By the way, R.A.F.T. is an acronym that stands for restate the question, answer the question, for example (include evidence from the text), and tie it all up with an ending sentence or big question.  C.O.P.S is an acronym that stands for capitalization, organization, punctuation, and spelling. So now you know all about ELA in Mrs. Coatti and Ms. Dowling’s class, what happens in your class?
