Here, Here! Here, Here!

Mrs. Wagner and Mr. Onativia

Town Meeting '09 021.JPG

Do the words treason, tyranny, taxation without representation and long live the King capture your attention? If they do, you probably were thrown back in time to the year 1776. Recently, colonists from Mrs. Wagner and Mr. Onativia’s classes performed a reenactment of a pre-revolutionary war town meeting in the Cottage Lane Library. Students were able to capture the emotion and understanding of a town torn apart by the decision to fight for independence or to support Great Britain. WOW! Talk about bringing Social Studies alive.

In other news, our little colonists took off their acting shoes and put on their author hats to publish their very own informational articles. As independent writers they chose their own topic, researched it, chose a mentor text to model their article’s design, and published. These articles were a hit! They used figurative language, fascinating leads, awesome adjectives, vivacious verbs, creative endings, and awesome features to grab their audience’s attention. They took some time but the end product was worth the wait!

In Science, we’ve been trying to pay attention to what we are putting into our bodies. Scientists have been learning about the New Food Guide Pyramid, the digestive system and how to improve their Healthy Lifestyle. Fourth graders should be getting 60 minutes of Daily Physical Activity

“Time flies when you’re having fun.” We can’t believe that the school year is over. This year, the team’s mathematicians have mastered many concepts. We will continue to work on many math concepts during our stay at Cottage Lane. We studied and will continue to review division. Fourth graders made steady progress and were enthusiastic about learning long division. They made great strides this year! Throughout this marking period, we practiced and reviewed our basic facts in multiplication and division. We will continue to study our facts this summer so we can WOW our fifth grade teachers.

For the last four weeks we were in full action with fractions. The pint-sized mathematicians learned how to compare, order, simplify, and find equivalent fractions. We used fraction pieces and operations to explore and understand fraction concepts. We also applied what we learned in class to the real world. We are trying our best to make the connections to why we learn such concepts and how to use them in the real world.

Have a safe and fun summer!
