Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you know, each of the students is reading a self-selected novel for ELA. Each of these novels has the setting in common, World War Two. The plots of the novels, however, are very different. It is these differences that are driving the research students have begun.

Students should be reading their novels every night. Without reading the novel, their research will have little direction and they will have difficulty using their time wisely. Any students having trouble understanding their novel are encouraged to attend office hours on Wednesday and Thursday after school. Please check that your son/daughter is reading a novel.

Each student is required to research across all subject areas. One particular group’s novel led them to search for maps and timelines (Social Studies), study graphs about population (Math), examine how different diseases affected the human body (Science), and write poetry (Arts). In addition to this, they are required to connect all of their research to their novel to fulfill the ELA requirement.

On Friday, we spent our class time developing a ‘plan of action’ together. The outline on the back of this page was completed based on the students’ expectations of what time/materials they would need.

Any parents/guardians who would like to come to class on Friday, May 28th are welcome. There are two possible times to attend, 9:15 – 9:50 or 12:05 – 12:45. During these periods all of the students’ projects will be on display in Room 177. You are welcome to walk around the room and ask students questions about their research.

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

Ms. D. Guertin
