For my I- Search project I decided to read the book “The Devil’s Arithmetic”, by Jane Yolen. This is a historical fiction book.
This book is about a girl named Hannah who was taken away from her family and was transported to a Polish Village in 1942. When she is there she meets three girls and tells them all the fascinating things from her home in New Rochelle. In this book I read about how her grandpa had a tattoo on his arm. They called the tattoos Malach ha-mavis which meant “Angel of Death”.
My favorite part of the book was when Hannah met her new friends at the Polish Village after she was taken from her family.
For Math, I decided to look up the tattoos that were on the Jews arms because I thought that it would be interesting. Also they had examples of the tattoos in the book.
For Social Studies, I created a timeline and a map of Poland during World War Two because my book takes place in Poland. I did 1940, 1942 and 1944. My partner did 1939, 1941, 1943 and 1945.
For Art, my partner and I decided to create an example of propaganda. We also told many things about it. For example I defined propaganda.
In conclusion, I thought that my book was interesting because Hannah told things about what was happening in her life before see was sent to the Polish Village. I thought it was depressing because she was sent to the Polish Village without her family and that she was seeing Jews being killed around her. I was also happy because when she went to the Polish Village she met new friends.
