The Big Lie
By: Isabella Leitner
The Big Lie is about a girl named Isabella and her family. They live in Kisvarda and they have a Jewish religion. One day the Nazis took over. They were forced to wear a yellow star on their shirt. They could not have a radio or bicycle and they could not talk to other people of different religions. Then a month later, they were forced to live in a camp where you are put to work and are treated very badly.
After this, they were separated from each other. When they got to the camp they had to strip, which the German’s called “disinfection”. Then a person came and shaved off all of their hair. They also had to live in little blocks and a thousand people lived in each block. They tried to escape many times but it never worked. They also had to march in a “Death March”. The Death March is when they count the people to see if they have all of them. Also, its when they killed people who could no longer work. Old, and sick people were killed as well.
After a few months, the characters in my book were moved. They worked there for about two or three years, then they escaped the death march and were rescued by the Russian Army. After then, they made it to New York, and found their father.
A few more years passed and they still couldn’t find their brother and sister. They found out that their sister tried to escape but got caught and beaten to death.
Their brother Philip wrote a letter to them not long after. He had been shot in the leg and was resting in an American hospital and would come to them soon. Finally, they had peace.

In ELA we had to make an I-Search project. What we had to do was make a Math section. For our Math section we made a bar graph of how many people died in the war. And we also had to write a paragraph.
We also had to make a Social Studies part. What we did for Social Studies is we made a map of Hungary and wrote a paragraph.
We also had to make a Science part. What we did for Science was we made a picture of poisonous gas and we wrote a paragraph.
We also had to do an Art part. For this part we made a poem about World War Two.
For our ELA part we had to write a summary of the book and then write about World War Two. Then, we had to put everything together in an I-Search project.
