For the I-Search project I read the book “I Am Fifteen and Don’t Want To Die”. The story is mostly about a girl that is stuck in the bottom of a cellar in Germany during World War II. They had taken in a man that was Jewish but he had a false birth certificate.
In about the 3rd chapter they had taken in a man by the name of Pista. He was basically the support of the house. Always happy as can be and he was always brave and determined to make a new journey. When he had first came, the Bankers wife was complaining about how sick her husband was and how much she wanted him to live. So, he wanted to be nice and he went off to get flour so that the people in the cellar could cook food, and also to get medicine for the retired banker.
When he came back the flour was only plaster, but the medicine was ok. They suffered without water and food for days and thank God that they had a cook in the house with extra food, because they had nothing to eat. Though they had not much to eat they stuck together and got through it all. Christine and her family sit in the bottom of a dusty cellar waiting for somebody to come and set them free.
They couldnt seem to find a way to get out of the city without being killed. The whole apartment building is bombed out and they are scared to death. Its almost like sitting in a tub full of fear. They got some money to get food and drinks, such as coffee. They didn’t no that the money was no good. So instead of the money they gave him a ring. A ring in exchange for the “false” money.
They left in about chapter 11-12 out of Budapest, but before they left they wanted to say hi to their friends in Huvosvolgy. They were so excited at the though of being able to go back to their villa and be able to eat food. Though thinking of going across the city was pretty risky.
On their way they saw a street-racing track and there was a river of blood. For three years they lived modestly in their country house, they had gotten more used to our new circumstance until political persecution began to eliminate people all around us like small pox epidemic.
They decided to stake all we had on getting across the frontier before it was too late. The day before Christine and her family left she set off on a bicycle for a distant village where no one knew her.
She went into the little church, all golden in the autumn sunlight, to say a prayer. Since then, Christine has visited the most beautiful places in Europe and done so many great things for her and her family but yet she is still scared to leave. But, Christine will never forget the simple little house of God.
