Is Kissing a Girl who Smokes like Licking an Ashtray? By Randy Powell is about an 18 year old boy who is “going out” with this other girl who smokes and he wants to know if it is like licking an ashtray.
The characters in this book are Biff, an 18 year old kid who looks 14 and hates it. He hasn’t had a girlfriend and he can’t talk to a girl without freezing up. He likes this girl name Tommie for the past 23 months and can’t even say “hi” to her. He has been planning to make his first move to asking her out for the past 2 years. It is almost Easter vacation and the only way he can see her is if he asks her out or sees her packing bags at the grocery store.
Then Biff meets this other girl who is a 16 year old, beautiful blonde, bad attitude, cigarette smoker. Her name is Heidi and her aunt is one of Biff’s family friends and Heidi is visiting her because she got suspended from her school.
Before you know it, Biff and Heidi are going out together and having the time of theirs lives with each other. Too bad it is only Easter vacation.
This book was a little boring in the beginning but once Biff and Heidi meet, the book starts to get exciting and the book gets really good all the way to the end. This book is so interesting; you won’t want to put it down. This book is appropriate for girls and boys ranging from grades sixth through ninth.
If Randy Powell decides to write a sequel, I would love to here the end of Biff and Heidi’s relationship. However, all in all, Is Kissing a Girl who Smokes like Liking an Ashtray? By Randy Powell is definitely worth buying or borrowing this book out of the library.
