Native American Project

Here are some sample ideas for your project.  These are not the only options you have.  If you would like to do something else, I will be happy to hear your idea.

NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE

Construct a scale model of a traditional Native American dwelling.  If possible, use the appropriate materials – for example, use clay and sticks to build an adobe building, or cloth to make a tipi.

Include with your model an informational paragraph about what American Indian nation used this sort of dwelling, and give some reasons why this type of dwelling might have been used.  Be sure to include your references where you found this information.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS

Do some research and find some legends, myths, or stories from two different American Indian nations.  Read these.  Write a summary paragraph about each legend or story you have read.  Then, write an essay of 250-500 words (1 or 2 pages) comparing the two sets of legends.  Did you find any similarities or differences?

NATIVE AMERICAN MASKS OR FESTIVE ARTIFACTS

Construct a scale model of a Native American mask or other artifacts such as a drum or pottery.  Include with your model an explanation of what American Indian nation used this artifact and for what reasons.  Be sure to include your references where you found this information.

STEREOTYPE NOTEBOOK/POSTER/COLLAGE

Look through recent magazines, newspapers, catalogs, or similar publications for examples of stereotypes about Native Americans.  You should find at least 5-7 articles, pictures, etc. each from a different publication.

Write a few sentences about each picture or article, explaining why it is a stereotype.  Include the date and source of each article.  You could make this a bit of an artistic project, using construction paper, calligraphy, artwork, etc. instead of typing everything.  If you make a poster, the reference can be handed in separately.
