Regents Exam

The New York State Regents Exam in English is a six-hour cumulative test of grades 9-11 that takes place over two days in the eleventh grade.  Students in English 11 Honors take the exam in January; students in English 11 Regents take the exam in June.  The exam consists of four writing tasks (see below) and multiple-choice questions based on documents, charts and graphs, and a speech. Students will be graded on their writing skill and their ability to take notes during a speech, interpret and analyze charts and graphs, compare or contrast several works of literature, and apply information from previously read novels to a provided quotation known as "the critical lens."

Task 1:   Listening and writing for information and understanding, as assessed by:
- a written response to a speech
- multiple choice questions on key ideas

 
Task 2: Reading and writing for information and understanding, as assessed by:
- a written response to a text and related visual (graph or chart)
- multiple-choice questions on basic comprehension

 
Task 3: Reading and writing for literary response, as assessed by:
- a written response to two paired literary texts
- multiple-choice questions on key ideas, details, and vocabulary

 
Task 4: Reading and writing for critical analysis, as assessed by:
- a written response to two works of literature read in class
