Getting Ready
Soon, my husband and I will be flying to Christchurch, New Zealand, on the other side of the world. I will miss my family and friends, and everyone at Cottage Lane School, especially my students. However, I am looking forward to my adventure with great excitement. There will be so much to learn about New Zealand culture, and especially about their schools.
Fortunately, my students did some research on New Zealand and created a PowerPoint to share the information with me. I'm sure the information will prove to be very useful when I arrive down under. I know they will be very disappointed if I don't send back pictures of kiwi and kaka birds, as well as people bungy jumping!
I have been thinking about the fact that New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere and the eastern hemisphere. That means the seasons are the opposite of ours here in New York, since we are in the northern hemisphere and western hemisphere. While we are in the middle of a hot, sticky summer now in July, it is still July in New Zealand, but it is the middle of winter there. You can check out the daily temperatures. Go to www.weather.com and type Christchurch in the box at the top. Follow the links to find Christchurch, New Zealand, 10-Day Forecast. See what I mean?
I hope you are having a wonderful summer and that you'll keep in touch with me while I'm overseas. Please visit this site often and post a comment when you have a chance.

what time is it there. it's 10:27 here.
Mrs. Chritie-Blick,
It is Dana and Jaclyn! We miss you sooooo.oooo much! You have an awesome view! It looks so pretty there. We (Mrs. Schneider included) wish we were there with you. What are the temperatures there? How is the climate? Are you taking any classes or teaching currently? In science class we are dissecting owl pellets! After getting over the gross part of it, we are now touching many rodent bones. It is amazing how many bones are in one owl pellet! The bones are very similar to our bones. We found a lot of rib bones, humerus bones, femurs, phalanges, and skulls (craniums). We are looking forward to the party next year when you come back. Please write back to us. Mrs. Schneider is really nice. Thank you for placing us in her class. Miss you. Keep exploring.....Hope to hear from you soon.....

Hi Ms. Christie-Blick! I am so happy to be talking to you again. I kept trying to write to you, but the site kept saying you that you didn't leave yet. I had lots of fun over the summer! I can't wait to see you again when I am in sixth grade.
This year, I am in Mrs. Murphy's class and there are lots of friends in my class. Jaclyn is in Mr. Doctors class, and Kira is in Ms. Schneiders class. I still play with them at recess, but I don't talk to them as much as I used to. I'm going to go to google earth to see where you are! See you next year!

Olivia
I was so thrilled to see all of your comments this morning! Now I don't feel so far away.
Jaclyn and Dana, you asked about my teaching. I have visited one school so far. Just as we sometimes had visitors to our classroom, I sit in the back of the room and watch the teacher and students. When the kids are doing independent work I go around and help. It was interesting and fun! I'll give you more details, and some pictures, in a future blog.
Glad you're checking out the Google Earth to see my home away from home, Paulina. It's an awesome program, isn't it? Can you see all of the sand on the beach? It must have been very low tide when the satellite took the pictures.
Olivia, how did you know what season it is here???
Siobhan, I thought about you the other day when I saw a patch of three-leaf clovers!
Yes, Zach, you would love it here!
Dear Mrs. Christie-Blick,

Dear Ms.Christie-Blick I hope you are having a great time there
HI!It's Erin. I was just wondering if you are going to any rugbee games or planning to. I was asking because one of my teachers Mr.Freeley went to a game for New Zealend and said they had a dance called the hoka and while they did it they made the other team stand still on a line. Halloween is coming! I'm beeing Cap'n Crunch. Funny Stuff!See you later.
P.s. Is there any animals there.
Dear Ms.Christie-Blick,
Hi I miss you so much!! I hope your having the BEST time in New Zealand! Me, and the rest of the other kids that used to be in Ms.O'Brien's class last year miss you so much!!! Guess What? My sister is in Ms.O'Brien's class! Brian and I are very happy about that! Our little sister Maura wishes you were her science teacher, but she's having fun with Mrs.Rudin.

Dear mrs. Christie-Blick
Are you having fun? well i just wrote a really long letter to that other teacher so i cant really talk to you now!! and the period is over ok
bye bye
Britty
Hi Mr. Freeley's Class! I loved reading your comments. Mr. Freeley knows a lot about New Zealand since he's been here. I have only seen the All Blacks (the rugby team) on TV. They are really good and win most of their games. Some say it's because of that haka dance they do at the beginning to scare their opponents. I hope Mr. Freeley has demonstrated this dance for you! It's very impressive! I will show you a video clip of it in a future entry so keep checking this blog site. I will also put together a page about the animals.
Jason, as far as I know, no new Narnia movies are being filmed here right now, but if you look at my New Zealand site you will see lots of pictures and information about the movie they already made here. Did you see it?
I know it's spring there because New Zealand is on the other side of the world so it's the opposite season there. You taught us that!
P.S. My sister says hi, She says hi again. She got Mrs.McFadden as a teacher.
P.S.S. I got Mrs.Berman she is a math teacher, I got Mrs.Jean as a S.S. teacher and Ms. Murphy as a science teacher.

Hello Again(for like the hundredth time) It's me Kira. Camp was grrreeaaat! It was really freaky at first because there was no one I knew there. But I soon made lots of friends. I have been staying in touch with them for the past couple of months. I was suprised that there were no major tests, but there was a lot of home work. It was also really hard to sleep becauseTHERE WAS NO AIR CONDITIONING! We were dying of hotness. Through about the first half of camp I woke up at 5:00 in the morning every day. But eventually sleep caught up with me and I started sleeping in really late. My classes were really fun and I got to sell my product on E-Bay. The really amizing part was that my dad bid, and won! In my second period,I got to make a profesional comic. Third period was really fu cause we did mock triels. Lunch was always buffe style. Fourth period was rocket class. We learned all about space and rockets. on the last day, we launched our own rockets! In fith period, we learned all about how to be detectives and the procedures you do at a crime scene! oops! Class is over, Got to go! Form, asproutagus
Hi Little Sprout! Glad camp was such a success. It sounds awesome! What is it your dad bought?! Will you go back to that camp again next year?
Ms. C-B
Yes, I miss everyone very much. I often think about you all. Sorry I haven't gotten another post on this Blog site, but I'm having trouble getting video clips on the site.
I hope you don't give up on me. Please keep checking back, as I have LOTS of great photos and videos. They'll be coming SOON!

Jill, sorry that I can't send a photo of a penguin yet. I live in the middle part of the South Island (see map on New Zealand Web site). There are no penguins living here. When it gets warmer we'll drive south and look along the rocky beaches. I hear there are penguins living there. If I see any I'll post a picture. I promise!
Ms. C-B
Hi Ms Christie-Blick,
It's Catherine from Ms Koester's class. I hope you are haveing a good time
From Catherine
Dear Ms. Christie-Blick,
This is Siobhan N. from last year. I was visiting Ms. Koester (now Mrs. Coatti!) and Ms. O'Brien and I was soooo anxious to see you and totally forgot that you were in New Zealand and ran (fast walked!) into Mrs. Heilbronn's class! I really miss you and I hope I see you sometime when I'm in middle school. In science class,we are learning about owls. First it was the skeleton, then owl pellets (because they have bones inside of them) and now owls. We are doing and owl assignment and I was assigned the Great Gray Owl. So far I've learned a lot of interesting facts about it! For example: The great owl has a body length of about 24-33 inches. I hope you are having a FAB time in New Zealand!
UP THE KINGDOM! FROM: SIOBHAN N.
Hi Siobhan! I'm sooooo sorry I wasn't there to see you. I miss you too. Thanks for telling me about your science work. It sounds really great. You were always a wonderful science student. Actually, I'm surprised you haven't answered the science questions on the spring blog page yet. Why don't you give it a try. If you get stuck, I'm sure Olivia would enjoy helping you because she's already given away part of the answer on another page. Good luck!
Ms. C-B
Dear Ms.Christie-Blick,
How are you doing in New Zeland? My teacher said you do have family members their. I still wish i could be their. I hope you have fun!!!!!

Dear Ms.Christie-Blick,
Hi,Ms.Christie-Blick how areyou doing today?Try to write back.Thank you
-Katiana
Good luck
Paige and Katiana,
Thanks for writing. Yes, my husband is with me here in New Zealand. It would be very lonely without him.
My son, Winston, is still in New York. He is going to college at Columbia University in New York City. I will be very happy to see him when he flies out to visit us at Christmas time.
We keep in touch through email and Skype. Skype is a computer program that allows us to use the computer as a telephone. Sometimes when I am working on my computer it starts to ring like a phone! I click on a button and I am connected to the person calling. We talk into the computer's microphone and we can hear from the computer's speakers. My mother-in-law even has a camera on her computer in England. When she calls I can see her talking to me! Isn't that cool?!?
Ms. C-B
Hi Mrs.CB!!!!Sorry I havent written to you for a while. Anyway, you asked me what my dad bid on. My dad bid on a product that I made and had to sell on e - bay for my first period class.I made a person out of erasers and called it the eraser buddy. He bid on it and thought that he would lose becuase it was amazingly popular, but he won! He had to give me $2.00 when I got home from camp. From,Asproutagus P.S I dont know if i will go again, but if I do, two of the people i met at camp that i stayed in touch with and i are planning to go to Amherst.
Asproutagus,
I think Daddy Sprout is super cool, AND he's lucky to have won the bidding!
In what towns do your Amherst friends live? Would you tell them about this site? I would love to hear from them! Any friend of the Little Sprout is a friend of mine!

How are you doing these days? Did you have a good Christmas. I got a lot of presents from my family and Santa Clause. Did you have a live Christmas tree? I don't. My friend told me that live trees can cause fires. But i am not sure!!!!! My family had a good Christimas!!! Do you have any friends in New Zealend to celebrate Christmas with. That would stink if you didn't. My grandmother broke her foot so that stinks for her. I thought the break went by to fast. Good bye!!!!!

Gotta Go! Bye!!
Mrs.Christie Blick, It is me, Jeffrey. So how are you doing? Did you see any new sites? In science, we are learning about models and designs! It is awesome. We get to use go carts!I got to go now. Bye!
Jeffrey, I'm glad you still love science. You were always a GREAT science student.
I have seen many new sites around New Zealand. It is a BEAUTIFUL country! Two weeks ago I was up in very high mountains, called The Southern Alps. This is where Lord of the Rings was filmed. Everywhere we looked we saw stunning views. You would LOVE it!
Ms. C-B
Hi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I was loocking at your picturers, and, why are people naked?
There are no naked people in my photos. Are you referring to the Maori dancers? The men wear skirts with shorts under them. This is a part of their tradition. The idea is to show how big and strong they are. This would have been very important a long time ago when one tribe might think about attacking another tribe. If one tribe could scare away the other tribe they wouldn't have to fight them. That way nobody gets hurt or killed. Doesn't that seem like a sensible idea?
Today, leaders of countries still try to scare leaders of other countries to keep from going to war. They scare them with words (threatening not to let them buy from, or sell goods to other countries). Unfortunately, it doesn't always work.
Ms. C-B
Hi you had my cousin paul still the same from last year. he is in Mr.Freely ,Mr.Krump and Mr.Moretti team the man team and I am Alison.

Hi Ms. Cristie Blick

Mrs Christy Blick,
How is living in New Zealand going
-Zach
hi
the other day i saw a show and it said that most people in Austrailia and New Zealand speak German. Do you hear alot of people speak german?
Most people in New Zealand and Australia speak English. That's because many of the people living here came from England, Ireland and Scotland (or their parents, or their grandparents did).
There are some people living here who originally came from Germany, but that's a very small group. I have also met people from many other countries who now call New Zealand their home.
Ms. C-B
Dear Mrs.Christie Blick,
How is New Zealand? Was it fun having a warm Christmas? anyway, I think that Jacklyn gave you chirpy. I think that but I am not positivly sure yet. Talk to you soon.
Erica
Erica, hope you had a wonderful holiday. I loved having a warm Christmas. It was great to be able to get out and take a walk by the beach Christmas day. From what I'm hearing, you're having a very mild winter in New York. Do you like it this way? Do you think you'll get any snow this winter?
Ms. C-B
Dear Mrs.Christie-Blick
i wish i was there. hope you are having fun. Also i don't Know who sent the bird.
From Sara
Dear Ms.Christie Blick,
Hi! You may not remember me but I was in Ms.O'Brien's class last year. You were a really good science teacher.
I miss you!
From,
Siobhan
Hi Siobhan! Of course I remember you. You were always very enthusiastic about science and plunged right in when it was time for the hands-on part! Hope you're having a great year at school. Thanks for taking a look at this Blog. What's your favorite post?
I miss you too.
Ms. C-B
Hi Ms. Christie-Blick!
What a wonderful web page! Would you e-mail at SOCSD so I can interview you for the EASO Newsletter? I'd love to include your experiences abroad!
Thanks,
Sarah
Do you like teaching in New Zealand?
Zach
I think New Zealand is really nice becausethe pictures were cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Mrs. Christie-Blick,
It must be really fun to move to a new country and see different places. I heard New Zealand is very beautiful and peaceful. Its amazing that your just starting you school year and were in the miiddle of ours. Is teaching kids in New Zealand as fun as teaching kids here. I bet not! It has been so different since you have left. We have a few new teachers here. One of them have taken you place while you are gone. Do you still have Chirpy? Is the weather crazy most of the time? Why are many movies filmed there? Do many people have cars there or do most peaple walk to work or other places? What do you do when your not teaching? What is your school day like? What is the Capital of New Zealand?
Well good-bye, We miss you
Signed
Z
We miss you ):
Hi Zach! Wow! What a lot of questions! First, the easy answer: the capital of New Zealand is Wellington on the North Island. You can see it on Google Earth on our New Zealand Web page. As a matter of fact, Dr. Christie-Blick is there right now for a week. He's giving a lecture at the university.
You're right. I do like teaching at Cottage Lane the best. When I teach here, it's to someone else's class. I miss having my own class.
The weather is really variable here. That means it changes a lot - often all in one day. That's because we're on islands out in the Pacific Ocean. The temperature of the ocean warms or cools the air above it. That air then blows over our islands. The climate (long-term weather pattern) is also changing because of Global Warming. As the temperature of the ocean changes New Zealand's climate will continue to change.
Most people have cars here, just as they do in the US. There is also very good bus service here. People are encouraged to take the bus to cut down on the amount of carbon dioxide that goes into the air. When I'm assigned to a school that's on the bus route, I take the bus instead of my car.
Movies are filmed here because it is such a beautiful country. Remember all of those scenes in Lord of the Rings? They were filmed in the Southern Alps, the mountain range near my house. The scenery is spectacular! When we were driving through the Southern Alps, there was a special stop sign set up on the road where all of the cars had to stop and wait for 15 minutes. A man told us that a crew was filming a commercial on the other side of the mountain and they didn't want any cars in the film.
I hope all is well with you. Your little brothers must be much bigger by now!
Ms. C-B
Dear Mrs. Christie-Blick,
How is New Zealand. I miss you so much. I will come to Cottage Lane next year to visit you. Hope New Zealand is great.
From,
Tara
Tara, so good to hear from you! How is SOMS? You're such a conscientious student that I'm sure you're having a great year.
As you can see from this blog, I am having a great time here in New Zealand. I'm having many wonderful and interesting experiences. Is there anything you want to see on the blog? If so, tell me and I'll put it on.
Ms. C-B
Hi its me ethan again! You might noot remember me i left a comment already but its gone now :( I might take a realllly fast train to boston I like it better than flying i hate it
Hi Ethan. Good to hear from you again. If you can't find your previous comment on this posting, maybe you put it on a different posting. Try clicking on a different comment button. There's one at the end of each posting.
Ms. C-B
Hello Mrs. Christie- Blick,
I miss you so much!! I can't wait for you to come back to Cottage Lane! I forgot to ask you, are we still going to have that party you said we were going to have when you come home? Just wondering. I need your opinion on something. Do you think i should take Spanish or Italian as a language next year? I cannot seem to chose. Italian is my culture but Spanish is used a lot more. Anyway, I love the school you are working at. I wish I were there with you. Hope to see you soon.
Bye!!
From Erica
P.S. i love Tiger Lily. He is so cute!!!!! Are you sure he is real because he looks like he is a doll?!
Hi Erica. Sure, we're going to have that party! Have I ever broken a promise to you?!? I miss you too and look forward to seeing you in September.
Both Spanish and Italian are beautiful languages, and many of the words are closely related to each other. Once you learn one, it will be very easy to learn the other. Let me know which one you choose for SOMS!
Yes, Tiger Lily is real. He lives in the classroom every day, but goes home with Miss Scott in the evening. I wish I could have a dog to live in my classroom!
Ms. C-B
Hi Ms.Cristie-Blick,
It's Tyler. I mis You soooooooo much. What time is it in New Zealand. What are you going to do when you get home. I am going to go to Las Vegas in 12 days.
From,
Tyler
Hi Tyler. Lucky you! I hope you have a good time in Vegas. My husband and I were there last August and saw an amazing acrobatic show, Cirque de Soleil. The performers performed their high wire acts above large pools of water and then continued dancing once they dropped into the pools. It sounds kind of weird, but it was quite sensational to see.
Right now it is 11:00pm on Wednesday. That means that it's 7:00am Wednesday morning for you in New York. I am 16 hours ahead of you!
I miss you too. I hope you're having a good year - your last at Cottage Lane!
Ms. C-B
do u like gum new zealand must rock best wishes john
It's Milly,
We miss you sooo much. I can't wait till you come back. My fifth grade teacher is Mrs.Murphy. She is Great. We still miss you.
Hey, how are you are you having fun?Well I know i am there is so many things going on at cottage lane!Maby next year i will come back and visit you!!!!
Hi, it's Kristen!
Hope you are having fun!!(: I can't wait to see you again! Therer are a lot of things happening at Cottage Lane right now! they addition for the school is almost finnished and the fifth graders are reaklly bussy! Espically the team of Mrs.Murphy, Mr.Doctor, and Mrs.Schiender! Can't wait to see you again!!!!
Hi Milly and Kristen! Good to hear from you. Glad you are busy and happy. I can't wait to see how the building has changed since I left! I'm sure it's been very interesting to see how a school is built.
Although it's spring in New York and your weather is getting nicer and nicer, it's fall here so our weather is getting colder and wetter. The other day I saw a flock of ducks flying north for the winter. It reminded me that I'm in the southern hemisphere, so the birds have to fly north to get warmer near the equator.
Enjoy your beautiful spring.
I miss you!
